Breed Description
Appearance
The American Wirehair cat is medium in size with a well rounded torso. Their dense coat does fit their name as it as often course to the touch. There are many different color patterns that are accepted. Adult males usually range from 8-11 lbs. as they reach full size.
Personality
American Wirehair cats love human attention and are very active. They are affectionate to their owners and usually like to follow their owners around and 'help out' with daily activities. They love to play and be the center of attention.
Origin
The American Wirehair is believed to have derived from a mutation in the domestic cat population in the last 1960's. A breeder from New York discovered a kitten she received from a small farm had the coarser hair and determined that it might be a new breed. That cat was bred and the breeding produced what is now known as the American Wirehair. The American Wirehair to this day is one of the rarer cat breeds.
