Breed Description
Appearance
The Birman cat is long and stocky in appearance with a large head and ears that are medium in length. Their coat is generally silky smooth and resists matting and is easy to care for. The color patterns for a Birman can be seal, blue, chocolate, and lilac points. Other less accepted variations are cinnamon, fawn, red, and cream point. Birmans are unique as they are the only cat breed to have white gloves and paws for every color type. Adult male Birmans generally grow to be 8-12 lbs. in size.
Personality
Birmans are known to be gentle and affectionate cats. They love attention and their heritage suggests that they are used to being adored. Generally they will greet visitors and are very social in nature. They would make a good pet for anyone that wants a cat with an even temperament.
Origin
It is accepted that the Birman cat originated in the Buddhist temples of the country Burma (which is now Myanmar). There is a legend surrounding the development of the breed and how it got its colors. The Birman ended up in France later and became popular by the 1920's as France accepted and wrote a standard for the breed.
